Related Programs Short Form Video: When desperate refugees flee Venezuelan president Maduro’s dictatorship, they are welcomed by the people of Cúcuta, a small Colombian city on the border. But a political firestorm erupts as people from all over the world attempt to deliver aid to the Venezuelans left behind, and the national guard reacts with violence.

Since the crisis, more than 5.6 million Venezuelans have left their country to avoid economic collapse and humanitarian distress. Their journey on foot can last more than 5,000 miles. Many of the Venezuelans that flee cross the Simon Bolivar bridge that connects Venezuela with Colombia, and Cúcuta quickly became a critical escape point for the desperate refugees.

Filmed in the midst of the crisis, THE CROSSING is a moving portrait of conflict, suffering, generosity and the depth of the human spirit.
