FRAGMENTS OF GENIUS is the story of two British autistic savants. Derek was extremely premature and weighed only 1 lb. 5 oz. at birth, is totally blind and has great learning disabilities, yet he is profoundly musically gifted, with perfect pitch and the ability to play any piece of music that he hears. The other young man, Stephen, is autistic and yet is able to draw perfect architectural drawings of scenes that he takes in and then later perfectly recreates down to the most minute detail with his pen never leaving the page. Each of the young men has had a mentor from a young age. Apparently, there are only about 25 autistic savants in the world with these kinds of amazing abilities. We also meet Prof. Alan Snyder, who has theories about autistic savants' brains that hint at the root of their abilities and their disabilities.
