Description

OLMSTED LEGACY: BRANCH BROOK PARK traces the origin of New Jersey's Branch Brook Park as the first county park in the United States. The program, narrated by CBS News veteran Charles Osgood, charts the park’s development, realization and expansion to its present-day 360 acres. Branch Brook Park reflects the philosophy of pioneer landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed the U.S. Capitol, the White House grounds and New York's Central Park, among others. He envisioned urban park systems as a common ground where citizens can seek respite from the travails of urban life. Today, Branch Brook Park is a mature landscape, a realization of the senior Olmsted’s vision, brought to life by his stepson, John Charles Olmsted. The seemingly natural environment is also a work of vision and artistry, sculpted with steam shovels and enhanced by spatial analysis.
